About Me

Hi! My name is Katie. I am a thirty-something living in northern Minnesota.

I am a huge nerd, and have been one for pretty much my entire life. I grew up watching numerous sci-fi series likeĀ Star Trek andĀ Babylon 5, as well as a number of movies of the same genre. I also read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy novels, and have been very into video games since I was about 18. Those are the topics that I generally tend to blog about. I also have two weekly features: Mythology Monday, where I talk about various myths and folklore; and Short Story Saturday, where I summarize and talk about a different short story.

I currently have a Patreon, but also operate a PayPal and Ko-Fi account if people would like to show support with a one-time donation.

Mythology Monday: Zombies

In honor of the spookiest of seasons, let us talk about one of the most horrific folkloric creatures of all: the walking dead.

I’M NOT DEAD

I just went through a very long, extended period of burnout, largely caused by how absolutely intolerable that my job had become towards the end of 2021! That, combined with the fact that the computer I paid $1500 for last summer doesn’t work as well as it used to since I had to clean and wipe the hard drive.

Thankfully, I was able to find a relatively inexpensive desktop computer with about the same specs, and am now in a position at my job that causes me significantly less stress.

So that brings me to the below announcements:

1) Clearly I need to have some kind of schedule, so I’m bringing back Mythology Mondays. That way I update on at least a semi-regular basis.

2) I’m restarting my Star Trek recap project. The new posts will be labeled Star Trek Redux and I will not be charging for them on my Patreon until I catch up. This is because I was never super happy with the ones I posted because it felt more like I was posting them to get them done than anything else.

3) Now that I have a new computer, the Lets Play series I’ve been planning will go forward, starting with the original plan: the first Silent Hill game. This will be in October, to coincide with spooky season.

4) I am going to be putting out a couple of game reviews in the near future.

So that’s the plan, and I shall be doing my utmost best to stick to it.

Short Story Time: “The Adventure of the German Student”

So, I was thinking about what to write about for Halloween. At first I was thinking “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” but I’ve ready that story and it’s actually kind of boring. Then I saw a series of videos by a Tik Tokker called cosbrian that spoke about a story by Washington Irving: “The Adventure of the German Student.” So let’s talk about that one.

And yes, this is going live on November 1. However I’m actually writing the post on Halloween and that’s when patrons are going to see it, so I’m still counting it.

A Cavalcade Of Frustrations

So, I was supposed to do a let’s play series of Silent Hill. Then I was having trouble getting the recording software I use to work with the emulator. Then I suffered an allergy attack that lasted waaaaaaaaaaaay too fucking long. Then my computer upgraded to Windows 11 and now I can’t really get any of my PSX emulators to work at all. Needless to say, plans have changed, since this is not something that I really want to deal with right now.

So here’s what’s going to happen instead: because I’ve had it a bit on the brain lately, what I’m actually going to do is a playthrough of the Mass Effect series. I’m downloading the Legendary Edition of the games as we speak, and will most likely begin recording it either later this evening or tomorrow evening after I am done with my normal job. I know that my recording software works with games that I have actually installed on my computer, so I’m really hoping that I won’t run into any more issues.

I am very tired.
