Shut Up And Take My Money: Bravely Default II

So, was anyone going to tell me there was going to be a Bravely Default sequel, or did I have to learn that when a demo dropped on the Switch store?

First, some background: Bravely Default was an RPG, published by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. It’s basically a Final Fantasy game, but with a different name: it had a plot revolving around crystals, and a lot of the spells and items were the same. It also had a variation on the job system that a lot of Final Fantasy games have. Essentially, you could change characters’ classes to fill different roles.

One major difference, however, is the mechanic that the series takes its name from: in battles, characters can skip turns to build up “brave points” which can then be spent to give a character more than action per turn. Knowing when to default and when to brave was a key component to winning fights.

Needless to say, the first game in the series was very well received, and it was only a matter of time until a sequel came out. Which is, I think, part of why I was taken by surprise here: there was already a sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer, that came out for the 3DS in 2015.

That one was actually a direct sequel to the first one, featuring a number of the same characters in the same world. That one, however, had a bit more of a lukewarm reception than the first one. So, I suppose that’s why they decided to just go ahead and title the next game Bravely Default II.

Bravely Default II is going to revolve around completely different characters, in a brand new world, which is also how the Final Fantasy series generally operates. This time, we have Gloria, the last remaining princess of a ruined kingdom; Seth, a shipwrecked sailor; Elvis, a scholar; and Adelle, a mercernary. They are on a quest to, you guessed it, save the world. Like the other two games, on their journeys they come across mysterious items called Asterisks, which allow them to take on different roles in battle. In particular, the demo showcases 4: vanguard, monk, white mage, and black mage.

Having played the demo recently, it seems to play mostly the same as the previous titles. One major difference, though, has to do with the hardware. Since the 3DS had two screens, the bottom screen was utilitzed to show maps or other information, while character movement, battles, and scenes took place on the top screen. Since the Switch only has one screen, all of the information has to be presented on that screen. There’s also the fact that the game is at a much, much higher resolution, which makes sense considering that the 3DS is a nine-year-old handheld with fairly small screens.

Another major change from the other two is that the demo seems to have done away with random battles, instead having monsters roam around environments, with battle starting when the party encounters one. This is very similar to how the battles work in the Tales series, or later Persona titles.

The demo, as mentioned before, is currently available on the Switch store if you want to check it out. Unfortuantely, as for a release date, we currently don’t have one other than “sometime this year.” This seems to mostly be so that the developers can incorporate feedback.

I do hope that we get a release date soon, though, because I really want to see more of the game.

(So, fun fact: my job is furloughed indefinitely because of the pandemic! Whee! What that means is I have no idea when I’ll be getting my next paycheck. Fortunately, I have Patreon and Ko-Fi, so if you’d like to support the blog, that’s where you’d do it. Thanks!)

Shut Up And Take My Money: Nintendo Reveals Its Next Console

Nintendo revealed its newest console today, and it actually looks pretty interesting.

Previously referred to as the NX, the console is going to be released under the name Switch. Looking at the video, this makes sense: it looks like it’s going to be a hybrid between a handheld and TV-based console.

The console (which has a built-in screen) rests in a dock, where it connects to a TV. However, when it’s out of the dock, you can attach controllers to it and carry it around like a handheld device. So far, it looks like there’s a decent lineup of games so far. Naturally, the next Legend of Zelda looks like it’s coming to the Swtich, and I’m pretty sure I saw a couple of people playing Skyrim in the above video. There’s even a rumor that Blizzard may be releasing Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft to the console (although this has not been confirmed by neither Blizzard nor Nintendo).

Personally, I think the idea of a handheld/console hybrid is pretty cool. There are a lot of console games that I would love to be able to take with me while I’m on the go. It also seems to be cartridge-based like the DS and 3DS, which also leads to the possibility of backwards compatibility.

I actually really kind of want one. Alas, we shall have to wait until March before it becomes available.

Shut Up And Take My Money: NES Mini

NES Mini

As I may have mentioned before, my dad likes to post interesting things about video games he comes across to my Facebook page. Today, he posted this, an article about a miniature NES console. And now I need it in my life.

The NES Mini, as it’s currently being called, comes pre-loaded with thirty classic NES games. According to the above article, the games are as follows:

-Balloon Fight

-Bubble Bobble

-Castlevania & Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

-Donkey Kong & Donkey Kong Jr.

-Double Dragon II: The Revenge

-Dr. Mario, Excitebike

-Final Fantasy

-Galaga

-Ghosts’ N Ghoblins

-Gradius

-Ice Climber.

-Kid Icarus

-Kirby’s Adventure

-Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, & Super Mario Bros. 3

-Mega Man 2

-Metroid

-Ninja Gaiden

-Pac-Man

-Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream

-StarTropics

-SUPER C

-Tecmo Bowl

-The Legend of Zelda & Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

I’m especially excited about the original Final Fantasy. I do have the Final Fantasy Origins edition that was released for PS1, but have never really had a chance to play the original version.

The NES Mini is set to release on November 11 for $59.99, which actually isn’t that bad of a price. Before seeing it, I would have expected it to retail for $100 or more.

Shut Up And Take My Money: Persona 5 Gets US Release Date

So, not only is Final Fantasy XII getting a re-release next year, but now we finally know when Persona 5 is coming to the US? It’s like RPG fan Christmas.

The game will be hitting US stores on (for the PlayStation 3 and 4) on February 2, 2014. This is, of course, Valentine’s Day, in case you care about that sort of thing. There is, of course, a special edition of the game that will be released as well, which includes things like the game’s soundtrack, a plushie of one of the characters, and even a book bag for those who want to shell out the extra money.

I’m actually pretty excited about this. While I didn’t really get much of a chance to play the first two games of the series, Persona 3 and 4 are two of my favorite games. And seeing as how this entry was announced in 2011, it’s about damn time.

Now if only we could get an actual release date for Kingdom Hearts III, that would be great.

Shut Up And Take My Money: Final Fantasy XII Getting HD Release

Fun fact: I love Final Fantasy. It is probably my 2nd favorite game series, after Silent Hill. And while Final Fantasy XII isn’t my favorite game in the series (hello Final Fantasy X), it’s still pretty high on the list.

So imagine my utter joy at learning that it’s getting a PlayStation 4 HD re-release.

Titled Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, it’s set to include improvements to the visuals, as well as the score. It’s also going to include certain elements that were in the game’s International version that was not released in the US, mainly a tweaked leveling system that allows you to choose certain classes for the characters (in the original, all the characters could learn every skill, causing the party to feel somewhat homogenized after a while).

We don’t have an exact release date yet, besides being sometime next year. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this, though, and will definitely be buying it whenever it’s released.
