Mythology, um, Tuesday: Ningyo

So, you might notice that this going up a day late. Well, there’s a kind of funny story behind that.

The way that this typically works is that I write these out the day before they go up on the blog proper, so that I can get them posted to my Patreon first. That means I typically write these posts on Sunday, then schedule them to go live on Monday. That didn’t happen this week.

Because I was up all Saturday night with the worst case of heartburn I have ever experienced in my near 38 years on this planet.

Getting old sucks, kids.

Anyway, let’s talk about Japanese mermaids, or ningyo.

Mythology Monday: Leprechauns

Most everyone has a basic idea of what a leprechaun is. Short, bearded dude, wearing green, keeps pots of gold at the end of rainbows. In fact, if you can manage to catch one they might offer you their gold if you let them go.

Of course, like most folklore, there’s a bit more to them than pop culture would have you believe. So let’s go ahead an take a look!

Mythology Monday: The Childhood of Fionn Mac Cumhaill

Welp, it’s Monday, so you know what time it is. This week, we’re going to start taking a look at the other big Irish culture hero, Fionn mac Cumhaill. Or Finn mac Cool, in English.

They’re basically pronounced the same, because, again, nothing in Irish is pronounced the way you think it is. I’m going to stick with the Irish version, though, because I think the anglicized one looks kinda silly.

Mythology Monday: Lupercalia

So, as I am writing this post it is currently Valentine’s Day. You know, the feast day of St. Valentine, a celebration of romantic love, and all that jazz. But what if I told you that the reason for the season used to be running around smacking people with goat skins?

Today, we’re going to talk about the Roman festival of Lupercalia.

Mythology Monday: The Twelve Labors Of Heracles

I think it’s been a little while since I’ve talked about a Greek myth, so today we’re going to look at the twelve labors of Heracles.

Note: while he is more often referred to as Hercules, that’s the Roman version of the culture hero. Also, I just like the way Heracles sounds a lot better, so that’s what I’m going with here.

This is also going to be kind of an abridged version of the myth, since otherwise we’d be here all day because it’s not exactly short.

Mythology Monday: Yara-ma-yha-who

I will be the first to admit that I don’t know a lot about indigenous Australian folklore. I first heard about this particular critter from a Tik Tok of all things. But if this is any indication, Australia’s monsters are about as ready and able to kill you as their actual wildlife.

That creature is the yara-ma-yha-who.

Hold on folks, because this actually gets a bit rough.
