Short Story Saturday: “Young Goodman Brown”

ygb

Wow, it’s been a real long time since I’ve read this story.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” was originally published in 1835 and republished in 1846, and has become a staple of high school English classes ever since. It’s a not-too-subtle allegory about the loss of faith, as well as how the Puritans were kind of awful. Which was one of Hawthorne’s favorite subjects, to be fair.

So, let’s get started.

Silent Hill 2 Retrospective, Part 4: Influences and Allusions

logo

Last time I talked about Silent Hill 2, we took a brief look at the critters infesting James’s nightmare world. This week, I thought I’d take a look at some of the other stories and items that influenced the game. Particularly, I’m going to be looking at Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1866 novel Crime and Punishment, as well as David Lynch’s 1997 film Lost Highway.

I’m going to start with the earlier work, Crime and Punishment.

Mythology Monday: Theseus Kills The Minotaur, Fucks Over A Woman, And Gets His Dad Killed

unnamed

So, in the past I’ve talked about how the Minotaur came to be, as well as Theseus’s part in the dumbest plan to find a wife ever conceived. Today, I’m going to bring those two together and tell you about how Theseus killed the Minotaur.

Short Story Saturday: “Schrodinger’s Cat”

A1CAQGFr-wL

Hello again! Today, I’ve decided to look at another story by Ursula K Le Guin: “Schrodinger’s Cat.” The story was orignally published in 1974, and was republished in a 1992 anthology called Cats In Space And Other Places. I love cats, and I love space, so why not?

Though I should note that space doesnt really figure into this tale. Also, it’s kind of a weird, stream-of-consciousness thing, so there’s that.

Anyway, let’s go!

Mythology Monday: Ishtar Literally Goes To Hell

Today I’m going to look at a myth that is super, super old. Old as balls. Over 4000 years old, to be precise, and one that’s one of the earliest examples of the “hero goes to the underworld to save a loved one” myth.

That myth, my friends, is the story of Ishtar’s descent into the underworld.

So, uh Fuck Ubisoft

So, as you can probably tell, this isn’t a Star Trek post. Don’t worry, I’m going to be recapping the next TOS episode next week. This week, there have been some recent, shall we say, shenanigans that I’ve decided I’d rather talk about instead.

As it turns out, the French video game developer Ubisoft has a bit of a sexual assault/harassment problem. So that’s fun! Though not really.

Mythology Monday: Susano-o vs.Orochi

YamataNoOrochi

Today, I’ve decided to return to Japan, and talk a bit about what happened to Susano-o after he got banished from heaven.

If you recall from the last time I discussed this, Susano-o lost a contest against his sister Amaterasu, which resulted in him throwing a flayed horse at her altar and killing one of her priestesses. Well, this story is about how he managed to get back into her good graces.

Short Story Saturday: “The Alchemist”

I realize that my last couple of posts have been a bit dark, a bit of a downer. So I’ve decided that I’m going to engage in one of my favorite pastimes today.

I’m going to spend several hundred words dunking on H.P. Lovecraft. So join me, won’t you, in examining one of the most unintentionally hilarious pieces of fiction I’ve ever read.
