The Trailer Park: Little Monsters

2019 is looking to be a pretty good year for horror comedies. First, we had a trailer for the Zombieland sequel. Now we get a trailer for a new comedy, Little Monsters.
Not to be confused with the 1989 film of the same name. This one is definitely aimed at a much older audience.
Little Monsters is an American/Australian/British co-production stars Alexander England as Dave, a bit of a burnout who moves in with his sister after a pretty bad breakup with his girlfriend. When his nephew’s kindergarten class goes on a field trip, he jumps at the chance to chaperone, if only to get close to their teacher Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyongo’o). However, he also has to contend with Teddy McGiggle, a children’s entertainer who’s a lot more pleasant on stage than off.
Oh, and also there’s a zombie apocalypse happening.
The trailer is absolutely hilarious. I think my favorite moment is when Miss Caroline leaves a tractor ride to try and investigate a strange person, realizes that said strange person is in fact, undead, freaks out, and runs back to the cart yelling for a the driver to start it back up. Then, when a student asks what’s going one, she immediately goes back to teacher mode and reassures them that everything’s fine, like she wasn’t freaking out five seconds ago.
Also, as I believe I have mentioned before, I think that Nyongo’o should be in basically everything, since she’s just that good.
Little Monsters is directed and written by Abe Forsythe. It actually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, but is going to see a wider release in the US on November 19th. I really hope that it comes to my local theater, since I really want to see it.

 

The Trailer Park-Zombieland: Double Tap

You know, I love the 2009 horror comedy film Zombieland. It ranks right up there with Shaun Of The Dead as one of my favorite zombie movies. I liked it so much, in fact, that when it was in theaters, I went to see it three times. In one week. And it never gets unfunny to me.

So of course I’m going to be hyped when the trailer for a sequel drops.

Zombieland: Double Tap reunites us with Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Witchita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) as they make their way to the White House during the zombie apocalypse. Eventually, Little Rock runs away with a guy called Berkeley (Avan Jorgia), which prompts the other three to head off in search of her.

Along the way, they meet up with the ditzy Madison (Zoey Deutsch) and the tough-as-nails Nevada (Rosario Dawson), as well as doppelgangers of Tallahassee and Columbus played by Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleton.

It also features Woody Harrelson dressed as both Santa and Elvis, which is legitimately hilarious to me.

The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Dave Callaham and Rhett Reese, who also wrote and directed the first film (which makes sense). It’s set to arrive in theaters on October 18 of this year. This is definitely one that I want to see in theaters when it comes out.

I know that by writing this post, I’m probably giving these people the attention that they crave, but it’s just too god damn funny for me to let this pass without making a comment on it. So, there’s this Twitter account and website that I, along with some other people, have recently discovered. What is this account/website’s purpose, you may ask?

Apparently they want Disney and Lucasfilm to remake Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The Trailer Park: Rings

So, when I first heard about this, I thought that they were just doing a straight remake of The Ring. I did a little research before viewing the trailer, and everything I saw said that this was meant to be a direct sequel.

Then I watched the trailer. And it looks like they’re remaking The Ring.

OK, maybe that’s not fair. There does seem to be a bit that’s different, and there’s the fact that it has an R-rating while the original film (which itself is a remake of a Japanese movie) was PG-13. There are a couple of scenes, though (particularly the one where the girl coughs up the clump of hair) that seem to be lifted from the 2002 film.

Rings (directed by F Javier Gutierrez) follows Julia (Matilda Lutz), who has to save her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) from the video’s curse. Along the way, they make a rather disturbing discovery about said video.

Now, I liked The Ring. I thought that it was quite effective for a PG-13 horror movie (not that all horror movies need to be rated R). I thought its 2005 sequel was kind of stupid, but I liked the first one. And it looks like they’ve updated the technology in the film as well, going from the video cassette of the first one to an Internet video. Judging from the scene on the plane, it also looks like the stakes are quite a bit higher. 

I still think that it looks somewhat derivative from the first one, but I might still check it out.

Rings hits theaters on February 3.

The Trailer Park: Wonder Woman

So, yeah. Not sure how I’m going to be able to really write this post without devolving into complete and utter fangirlism.

Admittedly, I haven’t seen very much Wonder Woman-related media. I’ve watched episode of Justice League and do have some familiarity with the 70s TV show starring Lynda Carter. My oldest sister is actually a huge Wonder Woman fan (largely due the aforementioned TV show), but I’m still familiar enough with the character to be really excited about this.

See, while there have been a TV series as well as animated Wonder Woman movies, there have never been any live action, theatrical films about the character. Which is a shame, seeing as how she’s one of DC’s most popular heroes.

This film, simply titled Wonder Woman, stars Gal Gadot as the titular princess of Themiscyra. She had played the role previously in the Batman V Superman movie, but didn’t really get the spotlight there. Apparently, people are starting to realize that women-led action films can actually do well, so hopefully we will be getting more in the future.

I also like what they’ve done with the costume. I haven’t seen BvS, but in the trailers for that one her outfit seemed kind of dull. In Wonder Woman, it looks very colorful and like her most well-known costume form the comics. Also of interest is that it is also being directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like it’s set during World War 2, which makes sense since Diana first appeared in comic form in 1941. Chris Pine is also in the film as Steve Trevor, who is frequently appears as a love interest for Diana.

The current release date for Wonder Woman is June 2, 2017. And I will definitely be seeing it. 

The Trailer Park: Keanu

I’m not gonna lie: I really, really like cats. I like cats more than I like most people. So it looks like this movie was made for me.

Keanu, directed by Peter Atencio and starring Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key, is about a guy named Rell (Peele) who is depressed because his girlfriend dumped him. That is, until he opens a door and finds an adorable tabby kitten that he calls Keanu. But when gang members break into his home and capture the feline, Rell and his friend Clarence (Key) spring into action to rescue him.

First things first: that kitten is fucking adorable. I would probably go to the ends of the earth to rescue that kitten (then again, I would probably do the same for any cat). I also love the premise and how completely and utterly ridiculous it is. Two dorks trying to infiltrate a gang to recue their pet cat. How can anyone not love this?

Needles to say, I am most likely going to be watching this when it comes to theaters on April 29.

It’s Official! Idris Elba’s In The Dark Tower

Remember how last November I wrote a post about how Idris Elba was being proposed to play the lead in an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower?

Yeah, it looks like it’s going to happen.

Idris Elba is going to play Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger of a land called Gilead which had fallen quite some time before the beginning of the story. Matthew McConaughey has also been cast as Roland’s nemesis, the man in black.

I am so fucking excited about this. The Dark Tower is probably my second favorite book series (after Terry Pratchett’s Discworld). I have a tattoo that’s inspired by these books. And I like Idris Elba as an actor and, as I’ve said before, I think that he would be a good fit for the role.

I am, however, a little disappointed that it’s going to be starting in the middle of the story, rather than at the beginning. But still, this is exciting news for a production that has been a long time in the making.

Of course, Roland being played by a black actor may piss some people off, because people of color in any role seems to elicit that kind of reaction among, well, racists. But I’m behind anything that pisses off racists, so I have no problem with that.

Did I mention I’m excited about this?
