You know, it’s been a little while since I dunked on discussed a story by H. P. Lovecraft. Let’s change that, shall we?
Let’s talk about “The Terrible Old Man.”

Let’s talk about “The Terrible Old Man.”
Continue readingSo, back in November I moved back to northern Wisconsin after living in Minnesota for 13 years. During that time, there’s something that I’ve been wondering: does Wisconsin have any local cryptids?
I looked it up, and the answer turned out to be several. Let’s talk about one of those today:the hodag.
Continue readingSo, a few weeks ago there was this kerfuffle on Twitter that started when a particular YouTube personality stated that Disney’s latest animated feature was basically a ripoff of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Now, I’m not touching that clusterfuck with a 10-foot pole, but it has caused something to percolate in the back of my brain.
I think people are too quick to call things ripoffs of other things.
Continue readingSo, you might notice that this going up a day late. Well, there’s a kind of funny story behind that.
The way that this typically works is that I write these out the day before they go up on the blog proper, so that I can get them posted to my Patreon first. That means I typically write these posts on Sunday, then schedule them to go live on Monday. That didn’t happen this week.
Because I was up all Saturday night with the worst case of heartburn I have ever experienced in my near 38 years on this planet.
Getting old sucks, kids.
Anyway, let’s talk about Japanese mermaids, or ningyo.
Continue readingHello! This week I’m going to be taking a bit of a break from the science fiction and fantasy stories that I normally cover, to talk about one of Kate Chopin’s tales, “The Story of an Hour.”
Continue readingSo, today I’ve decided to veer off from Irish mythology and go back to Greek mythology to tell you all about the time Ares got stuck in a jar for a year.
It’s actually kind of a a funny story.
Continue readingThis week, I’m going to be taking a look at a story that’s a bit more light-hearted than the last post, which was also cat-related. This story is Naomi Kritzer’s 2015 tale “Cat Pictures Please.”
I think that’s a phrase that most of us can probably relate to.
Continue readingMost everyone has a basic idea of what a leprechaun is. Short, bearded dude, wearing green, keeps pots of gold at the end of rainbows. In fact, if you can manage to catch one they might offer you their gold if you let them go.
Of course, like most folklore, there’s a bit more to them than pop culture would have you believe. So let’s go ahead an take a look!
Continue readingHello, everyone! So there’s not going to be a Short Story Sunday this week; instead I’ve decided to have those be every other week alternating with other posts the other weeks, mostly so that I can try to clear out some other projects I want to do (i.e., the Silent Hill retrospectives and Star Trek recaps). So the next one is going to be next week, and this week I’m doing this post instead.
In other news, I am actually getting a rather substantial pay increase at my full time job, which is a very good thing since it means I’ll have to rely less on Patreon to help pay bills and whatnot. To that end, I have actually set up a separate bank account for Patreon/Ko-Fi/PayPal donations to go to instead, which will be used solely for running this blog (i.e. obtaining media for reviews, paying to keep up domains, etc.).
Which brings me to my new goal: while my laptop is fairly decent, I’ve had it for a few years and it doesn’t run quite as well as it used to. It also isn’t all that ideal for stuff like streaming and capturing game footage. So my goal, for right now, is to try and raise money to buy a new, more powerful computer so that I can do gameplay videos and, perhaps eventually, streams on Twitch or YouTube. I’m also eventually hoping to add some original fiction pieces to the blog, or perhaps starting a spinoff blog dedicated directly to that.
So, if any of that sounds interesting to you, you can donate to my Patreon,Ko-Fi, and PayPal pages to help out with that goal. Of course, if money’s a bit tight interacting with and sharing posts around also help me out a great deal!
Thanks, and I shall see you again soon!
